You Can’t Take What I Don’t Give You!

There’s a quote from Shakespeare’s Othello I love:
“The robbed that smiles, steals something from the thief”
I think sometimes we all have moments in our life when we feel we have been robbed,
cheated on, betrayed or sometimes simply misunderstood.
We don’t set about to have enemies, or to have conflict in our lives, but sometimes people come into our life and take a little bit too much from us. They may take our happiness, our peace of mind or maybe just our smile. They don’t necessarily do it with ill intent, or even on purpose. Sometimes it’s us who does it to them.
I learnt something this week, that if somebody wrongs you, the best way to deal with it is to never let them know the negative affect they have had on you. It’s like feeding the beast, the more you feed them, the stronger they get. If you become the negative mirror image of the other person, all that happens is that they end up feeling strong and in someway vindicated by their actions.
If you don’t react the way they want you to, If you don’t let them steal your happiness, you actually deprive them of the outcome they may have been looking for, and you actually end up “stealing” their thunder.
If it’s you that has been the thief and you recognize your own behaviour, don’t get caught up in the game, end the argument, apologize if you have to and move on. There is way more virtue in that, than being right. (Right is just another point of view anyway)
