Friendships...Let's take the time to touch again

“We lived in farms, then we lived in cities and now we’re gonna live on the internet”
~Sean Parker.. (The Social Network, 2010)

I’ve just seen the movie, “The Social Network”, about the founders of facebook and I loved it!

The movie is not so much a reflection on the users of facebook, but the relationships developed and destroyed during the machinations behind the phenomenon.

The movie spotlights the old age dilemma of ambition versus ethics and morals.

It got me thinking though on the whole concept of social networks on the internet, and the actual physical means of typing words into the computer and “acquiring” friends and popularity through cyber space.  The founders of facebook ‘got rich’ because they supplied something that was obviously very much in demand. The numbers are the proof, 500 million users says a lot about demand!

The question is WHY?

Why do we all want to be part of the cyber universe? Is it as simple as, we want to connect any way possible.

I’m what I call touchy, feely. If I like you, I smile at you, I touch you. How is someone like me suppose to express those emotions on the flat screen? For me, nothing beats the intimacy of a physical kiss or hug…..xoxo… These crosses and circles are not even close!

But are cyber friendships really just another way of touching ? And do we have to evolve our senses and social behaviour in order to keep up?

I think social networks, just like the one we’re creating in this amazingly blog community are a valuable and important reference tool for this generation. We can share our experiences and wisdom from all around the globe and “touch” each others lives.

I use facebook and I love it!  But the thing I least like about facebook is that it has devalued the title of ”friend”.  My  friends, are and always will be, the people I share my life with, my “real” life. The ones I cry with, laugh with, play with, the ones who give me the experiences I can contemplate on screen, because they are right by my side doing life with me!

I never thought I’d see people living in space in my lifetime, but apparently there’s 500 million of us voyeurs living in a place called cyberspace!

Always Be You,

Ms.Fit
